Home Remedies For Migraines

Migraines are an intensely painful type of headache that also commonly coincide with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and visual disturbances. Although the cause of migraines has not been definitely established, doctors are getting a clearer picture of the abnormal nerve activity around the brain that may result in this debilitating condition.

As migraines can also be triggered by factors such as stress and diet there are certain steps you can take at home with regard to your diet and general lifestyle that may lessen the chances, frequency and severity of your migraine attacks. It is therefore a good idea to exercise regularly (though not over-vigourously, as this kind of over-stress can actually trigger an attack) and ensure that your diet is packed with fresh fruit, vegetables and dried fruits. Make sure also to drink plenty of water every day as dehydration is thought to trigger – and significantly worsen – a migraine attack.

It is also a good idea to add garlic and grape juice to your regular diet, as these may also help to reduce the frequency of migraines. You can also make a juice mix of spinach, beetroot and cucumber, as this may also help to relive migraine symptoms.

While these measures may well help relieve your symptoms and are in any case good common sense for anyone looking to improve their overall general health they may not be enough in isolation to sufficiently tackle the problem. After all, if you suddenly sense the onset of a migraine getting a drink of water or an orange may well not be your first consideration as you will most likely be looking for instant relief. One alternative option you can try at home may actually bearomatherap, which has been shown to work well in helping to decrease the severity of migraines.

First, find a clean cloth and dip it in a water solution mixed with the oil of lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint or primrose oil. Primrose oil is particularly good as it is an anti-inflammatory agent and will prevent blood vessels from contracting. Then place the cloth on your head and the back of your neck until you feel some relief. Alternatively, you can make a cold compress and place it on your head and on the back of your neck to get some relief from an attack by alowing your blood flow to your head and allowing for some additional relief.

To do so, soak a towel in water then squeeze the water out to avoid excess water leakage. Fold the towel and store it in your freezer. Leave it for a while before taking it out, ensuring that it is very cold. Then, place it alternatively on the back of your neck and head to gain relief. You can also place it over the eyes if this helps. Conversely, dipping a towel in hot water and applying it in a similar fashion has also been known to help relieve migraine symptoms.

Finally, if you prefer to try eating something to help you may also try taking a bag of corn chips or other salty chips with you for a snack as salt generally will help to calm attacks by affecting your body’s circulatory system. This may or may not bring an end to your migraine attack, but if it doesn’t end it totally it may at least buy you enough calm time to get your frozen towel treatment ready.
